Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring sulfur compound and nutritional component of many foods. It is found in the normal diets of humans and almost all other animals. MSM is made up of 34% sulfur, the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body. MSM supports healthy, active lifestyles and benefits multiple structures and functions within the body, including connective tissues and the respiratory system.

Over the years, we have invested our resources to insure the longevity of MSM because we believe strongly in the benefits of MSM. Now that our capabilities are well established, our attention has turned to the ongoing scientific research of MSM. The clinical studies we are helping to complete will not only serve as marketing pieces for OptiMSM, but, more importantly, will provide the scientific community with tangible evidence of MSM's efficacy.

Cardinal Nutrition is proud to have sponsored the first clinical trial of oral MSM to be published in a peer-reviewed medical journal: Barrager E, Veltmann JR, Schauss AG, Schiller RN. A multi-centered, open label trial on the safety and efficacy of methylsulfonylmethane in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis. J Altern Complement Med 2002;8:167-74.

Cardinal Nutrition is also dedicated to demonstrating the safety of OptiMSM, and sponsored the first toxicity study of MSM to be published in a peer-reviewed journal: Horváth K, Noker PE, Somfai-Relle S, et al. Toxicity of methylsulfonylmethane in rats. Food Chem Toxicol 2002;40:1459-62.

Cardinal Nutrition is also proud to be sponsoring the largest clinical trial of MSM yet undertaken: an IRB-approved, randomized, double-blind study of the efficacy of OptiMSM in supporting joint health. Watch for the forthcoming press release.

Our medical advisor, Stanley Jacob, M.D., has been studying the clinical effects of MSM for more than twenty years. He has chronicled thousands of case studies and personal testimonials attesting to the benefits of MSM. Initially his work began with DMSO, of which MSM is the primary metabolite. Much of his research on DMSO has been used to promote MSM. Articles and studies on MSM can be found searching its various scientific names:, including methylsulfonylmethane, DMSO2 and Dimethyl Sulfone.

Cardinal Nutrition maintains the world's most comprehensive, seachable database of full-text articles on MSM and DMSO. This database, updated and expanded continuously by our director of scientific affairs, Dr. Jeremy Appleton, is a valuable resource that enables Cardinal to provide expert scientific support to our business and research partners.

Dr. Stanley Jacob and his associates have been working with DMSO and MSM for more than 30 years. During their research, they discovered that a portion of the DMSO was converted to MSM in the body. MSM turned out to be a more stable metabolite of DMSO with similar properties. There were an estimated 50,000 articles published on DMSO, but only a handful have ever been repeated with MSM. Physicians and other health care providers have relied primarily on previous DMSO studies, lower animal studies with MSM, as well as MSM case studies and anecdotal reports
Benefits & How it Works: Only OptiMSM is premium, distilled MSM — always precisely manufactured in the U.S.A. and rigorously third-party tested to ensure purity. OptiMSM is the MSM quality leader, made by the MSM experts and manufactured to more stringent product specifications than any other MSM. Clinical research confirms that OptiMSM is safe and effective.

All MSM in supplements must be manufactured, making purification an essential step in the production of MSM. There are two methods by which MSM is purified-crystallization or distillation.

Cardinal Nutrition's MSM has always been distilled for purity. Distillation is a process of purifying MSM that uses heat to separate pure MSM from impurities and by-products of manufacturing through unique boiling points. MSM's 460° F (238° C) boiling point allows pure MSM to be isolated from solution, producing the purest MSM available. In crystallization, the purity of MSM is highly dependent on the quality of the raw materials and on the procedures used during manufacturing.1

While some manufacturers of MSM chose crystallization because it is a cheaper process, Cardinal Nutrition made the decision in 1989 to distill its MSM to assure the unsurpassed purity of its finished product. Industry research favors distillation as the preferred purification method, "In fact, a sound approach to the selection of appropriate separation processes is to begin by asking: Why not distillation?"

We won't compromise the purity of our MSM for the sake of economics. Only Cardinal Nutrition MSM is guaranteed to be positively pure through purification by distillation.
